Sharp Leadership: Influence vs. Movement

Leadership is not just about influence: it is a movement.

If you move and influence people, alone, then that’s it – you influence them. If you want to create real impact, carry your people with you. If you carry your people with you,

1) you won’t be alone, 2) you will get support, and 3) the sound of all y’all’s feet will cause an earthquake of positive influence…

…which will impact people behind you, beside you, in front of you, and generations down the line. Bonus – you will be happier.

In my class, our professor, a former U.S Ambassador, brought in a speaker – Carl Sharperson, a former Marine Corp Pilot and a top Leadership Innovation Strategist, to speak to us. He authored Sharp Leadership. His book is transforming the way I lead my life and interactions.

– Below is my Sharp Leadership project (how did I do?)

You can use Carl’s Five key principles below to – carry yourself & your people with excellence. These principles are –

1) Tell the truth: how important is this? E.g. – If as an engineer, you tell your marine pilot his plane is half-full when its not, because you are scared, you may have just cost the pilot his life if he goes flying far thinking his fuel tank is full. Let your responses be – no, yes, or I will find out.

2) Be accountable: Be a man/woman of your word. Mean what you say and say what you mean. Do what you say when you say you will do it and how you say you will do it.

3) Take care of your people: If you take care of your people, your people will take care of you.

4) Give and receive feedback: Use a sandwich model – compliment, offer criticism, then compliment. Or use the Bringles Model – Ask for feedback first and then give feedback after.

5) Be fair: From speaker LeRoy Crooks, an industrial genius – “Don’t do something for one person if you can’t do it for everyone.”

First, Improve the World before Perfecting Yourself – here’s why

And…Its all about timing

I know, I know…sounds like marlarkey – meaningless talk, nonsense…! But, I assure you, it isn’t it.

In the previous post, Your Calling vs. Your Mission, I shared the following quote:

Improving the world around us comes before perfecting our own inner world ~ Mendel Kalmenson

Then I asked the question –

Did you notice the twist in that quote? Well, did you?

Its true. Transformation begins on the inside before it can be expressed on the outside. It only makes sense to work on yourself first before you work on the world. One must blow the flames of God’s word and God’s call in their souls first so that the heat of their fire can bring warmth to those around them.

But,

Do you have to “perfect” yourself first to before improving the world around you? When a house is on fire, anyone who can carry a bucket of water to put out the flame is required to.

When you work on yourself and obtain some wisdom, knowledge, or understanding, begin improving the world around you. Find a need, a problem and speak or write or contribute a thought, an idea, an alternative to it.

You have little to share. God can multiply your two loaves and five fishes to feed the 5000. Have faith to share the little you have. That’s all he needs

You don’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to perfect your craft to do something. Perfecting yourself means focusing largely on yourself most of the time to build up strengths and develop weaknesses. It means perfecting your craft before crafting something to share.

But, that means the world around you will keep burning and sobbing because you “voice” is silent. That voice may be public speaking, art, singing, comedy, acting, painting, drawing, teaching, writing, blogging, designing, finance…you know yourself.

By the way, perfect may never be attained. Any true master knows there must remain a student of life and their craft. So –

If you have come to a point where you can offer something, do it. Start now! If not now, when? If not you, who? If not here, where?

Don’t forget –

Done, is better than perfect

And though it is necessary to work on yourself, it is NOT required for you to become perfect to offer what little you have that is currently needed to put out the flames of evil confusing beautiful souls and destroying your part of the world.

Its all about the timing.

Work on yourself first. Do good work yes. Push to be excellent, to be perfect – yes! But, prioritize your decision to improve the world around first, before pushing to be perfect.

Ideas inspire! Actions achieve

Start Before You Are Ready

When I had the vision and started building #Threelly (www.threelly.com), I had no idea what I was doing or if it will even succeed.

But I STARTED nonetheless

Fast forward a few moons ahead, the site is up running, a vibrant community has been built curating and slicing some of the best videos on the web to expose hidden ideas. Had I waited to be ready, this will never have happened.

1.) Most people wait for the perfect timing before they do anything. Perfect timing to start a business, finish school, get married, be happy, e.t.c. Perfect timing doesn’t exist and any person looking for one is simply just making excuses to avoid taking action.

2.) A Chinese proverb reminds us

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” .

3.) So, stop making excuses! Stop waiting for the PERFECT time! Stop waiting to be ready! Start taking action! Start now! Start small and grow!

Self Education

Self-education is one of the most valuable skills you can learn.

People who master the skill of self-education have a whole world of possibility and opportunity opened up to them that those who rely only on formal education do not.

With self education:

1.) You can learn at your own pace and schedule

2.) You can go as deep or shallow on subjects you are interested in

3.) You can learn many subjects as needed

4.) You can learn with free content or pay for premium content as needed.

There is almost nothing you can’t do in life if you have the ability to teach yourself. And we live at a special moment in time when content is free and abundant. Blogs, Youtube, google, podcasts, books, e.t.c There really should be no excuses for not learning. .

How to Touch People Deeply

This is going to be an excellent year.

This week I have been all about the intricacies of interactions and connections.

I wrote an article called Answer people not their Questions where I suggested that instead of just answering the questions people in our sphere of influence come to us with, we should see beyond that.

We should answer them in such a way that they feel deeply touched and become conduits for a nuclear explosion of positive influence.

This is important because people seldom fluently describe what they want to say. In fact, being able to say exactly what you want to say, feel, or want is a gift. Being able to clearly articulate an idea is considered gold according to the Book of Proverbs.

So, its no surprise that people ind it hard to say exactly what they want to say or describe exactly how they feel. What’s more, without sufficient information of what people who speak with us are going through, we will experience difficulty in discerning what is NOT being said by folks. And it may be difficult for us to touch them deeply.

And I mean s…o…u…l deep!

In fact, we may end up thinking of a way to answer people while they are still speaking. So, this has been on my mind.

Yes, as I wrote in Make the Most of Your Nuclear Reactions –

~ When people interact its like  A NUCLEAR REACTION ~ The Rebbe

and

Its not how many people you touch, but how deeply you touch them that determines your sphere of influence ~ Mendel Kalmenson

We can use open-ended questions to listen well and help folks open up (See – Make the Most of Your Nuclear Reactions).

But what exactly can we do to not only gather intel through open-ended questions, feel the story through listening, but also answer in a way that helps people to feel deeply touched?

Here is a thought I have been pondering. Continue reading “How to Touch People Deeply”

Make the Most of Your “Nuclear Reactions”

Hello folks,

This is going to be an excellent year

I have often said, success is not about the destination, and its not about the journey either. Its about THE PEOPLE on the way to your destination. Our dreams and visions are for the people. Through our interactions with them we get inspired to think, dream, and imagine.

To succeed, we find out what they want and serve them. Regardless of how talented and gifted we are, we still need to deal with people. And even after all the adventure is done, we are left with – people – the good, the bad, and the ugly. And we still need to deal with them.

But, I often think we forget just how powerful our interaction with people are.

So, here’s a perspective* from The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory –

You think that human interactions are like chemical reactions. When two elements interact, they result in the creation of a third compound. But people aren’t chemicals.

~ When people interact its like  A NUCLEAR REACTION ~

A nuclear reaction has a center, from which further reactions spread in all directions. As the outer rings of that sphere gets larger, the number of reactions grow exponentially.

Likewise, when you touch the heart of one person very deeply – even just for a moment – he in turn will touch many other people, triggering a nuclear explosion of positive influence.”

THE MAIN ATTRACTION

Okay! Question.

img_1320

If you planned on visiting Hollywood and actually did, what would be a memorable experience for you? Would it be –

  1. Going up to take a photo at the Hollywood sign
  2. Hiking on the “Walk of Fame” on Hollywood Boulevard – OR –
  3. Actually walking into or meeting and talking with a Hollywood star?

FOR GOD’S SAKE: HOW MANY KEYS TO SUCCESS ARE THEY? (Indulge me for a sec)

Let me be real for a minute.

Hands up if you have ever watched a video or read an an article that said something like:

  • The THREE things you need to succeed
  • FIVE keys to success
  • This ONE thing will make you rich in a year
  • SEVEN Life Changing Keys to Success
  • SIX Traits the Most Successful People Have in Common

….and so on.

Ok. Many hands…

Now! Hands up if you are sick and tired of hearing about “this” key to success, “that” key to success, and the many other different keys to success that never seem to end?

Hmm hmm…

These days, listening to “The Experts” these days end up confusing and frustrating some of us. They share keys like be consistent, determination, commitment, communicate well, excellence is required, vision is necessary…or need I go on?

While these are informational, across the board, they are highly personal to the experts. Folks need different keys for different areas of their life and business; for different industries, at different times. That’s why “keys to success” never seem to end.

After listening to several or trying to put them to work, you end up becoming frustrated. I think its because the many “keys to success” out there miss a pivotal focus.

And, this focus is the ONE & ONLY key to success there is, if one should exist Continue reading “FOR GOD’S SAKE: HOW MANY KEYS TO SUCCESS ARE THEY? (Indulge me for a sec)”

RAISE THE ROOF!

I confess!

I love dancing and singing.

I really do! Especially when it comes to worshiping God in song.

Me & Jesus

Often, I get lost in it that I forget about time and commitments. That often causes problems.

And that is the dilemma Ale faced recently.

Meet Alejandra

She is a beauty, a dancer, a worshiper, a lover of Jesus, a friend of God, a risk taker, a woman of faith…from Columbia. She is (in typical Ale lingo) – just amazing!

When Ale experienced getting lost in God’s love, goodness, and presence while praising God “in the closet,” she too forgot about her time and commitments with her parents. She got chewed out for it. Trying to find an answer, she asked –

“Ish’, how do I balance worship of God with honoring time and other commitments even though I get so lost in worship and conversation with God during adoration (quite) time?”

At first, I didn’t have an answer. But then it hit me. Continue reading “RAISE THE ROOF!”

WALKING THE WALK

I am passionate about developing God given ideas and destinies. But, I don’t just write and talk about it. I just don’t talk about family and relationships. I actually do it myself. I share things I learned from God adventures and lessons I am sipping-in, in real time. My close friend, Louis and me, have been building a social network curating platform that is getting some buzz now. It started as a game, a concept. But now, its for real.
